Work is scheduled to start next month on a new sound system for the Cabool High School auditorium, along with some basic lighting upgrades. And Cabool Alumni Association is joining the effort to improve the auditorium by launching a fundraising drive for a changing room with restrooms.
Cabool Development Foundation (CDF) is funding the $19,984.21 sound system project with Cabool Schools providing electrical work. The sound system will be installed by Headline Productions, LLC.
Renovation of the auditorium was the focus of a Coover Foundation grant request written by Larry Baker on behalf of CDF. It sought $19,466 for a new sound system, and CDF pledged $20,000 for new lighting, with the school district on board for needed electrical work. The grant was not approved, so CDF regrouped and decided to use its $20,000 pledge toward the sound system.
Cabool High School has one of the few school theater facilities in rural Missouri. It was built during the 1936-38 construction of the high school, with the original stage located where the orchestra pit is now located. The present stage was built as part of a 1963 project that included a music room and the home economics and science rooms. The facility seats 394.
A changing room/restroom located off the stage was lost in a fire in 1971, along with storage for sets and costumes. Cabool Alumni Association would like to replace that.
“We are hoping that CHS alumni will donate funds for the rebuilding of a changing room with bathrooms to replace the one destroyed by fire in 1971,” a Cabool Alumni Association spokesperson said.
“If you can help, please make your tax deductible check to CDF and mark it as ‘Alumni Auditorium Project.’ Mail this to our Alumni treasurer, Missy Dotson, Cabool High School Alumni Assn., 2842 Highway M, Cabool, MO 65689.”
